Solar Turbines is looking for Product Application Engineer
Job Purpose
Provides technical and commercial guidance in the acquisition of new projects. Delivers timely and accurate bookings to Manufacturing. Also is responsible for the successful conclusion of projects by utilizing effective and established planning, scheduling and coordination techniques.
Dimensions:
Develops solutions to difficult technical problems with geographic responsibility worldwide. Responsible for an average of 15 to 20 complex customer inquiries annually. Participates in 3 to 5 product or process improvement programs.
Nature and Scope:
- Applies state-of-the-art tools for producing data that describes the selected equipment, as well as utilizes advanced scheduling, planning and coordination techniques to assigned projects.
- Develops solutions to technical problems; may involve other Solar organizations/groups such as Engineering, Project Management and Quality as well as external suppliers and customers in the resolution of specific issues.
- May provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to lesser experienced Applications Engineers as well as be tasked with reviewing their work for accuracy and completeness.
- May assist Sales in difficult or complex customer negotiations as well as in the implementation of complex projects. Identifies creative solutions to manage Solar’s risks associated with projects.
- Is responsible for not only identifying and managing critical issues but also for bringing them to an agreeable conclusion.
- Participates in the discussion of the philosophy, design, and application of package features and alternatives.
- Continually increases product and process knowledge in order to perform duties more effectively.
- Improves knowledge of the performance capabilities and limitations of Solar’s entire product line, as well as knowledge of sales strategy, economics, competitor capabilities, and customers.
Product Management:
- Responsible to provide input to the development and application of Solar’s turbo-machinery package products in a manner, which will ensure market acceptance as well as acceptable financial performance.
- Represents Sales & Marketing at package design reviews and communicates results to appropriate personnel.
- Coordinate and communicate to field personnel the introduction of new products as well as major changes to existing products.
- Specification and implementation of standard product features and cost reduction opportunities.
- Involved with the development of databases and tools used to train and communicate company philosophies, features, and methods to the rest of sales and marketing.
Project Applications:
- Provides timely and accurate support to Field Sales personnel to assist in the capture of new equipment sales.
- Assists in the preparation of proposals by reviewing customer specifications, developing corresponding technical comments/exceptions and developing Applications Check-sheets (ACS) with accurate custom feature pricing.
- Selects the optimum equipment configuration to competitively satisfy the customer’s needs.
- Devises alternative innovative approaches to customer applications when standard equipment cannot be utilized.
- Ensures commercial and technical risks are effectively managed during proposal preparation, specification reviews and customer negotiations. Releases firm orders to Manufacturing in a timely and accurate manner.
- Supports Project Management as a consultant on firm orders. Participates in customer negotiations to support the Sales process.
- Conducts “hand-over” meetings to identify critical commercial and technical issues. Coordinates and assigns tasks to other company departments and groups as part of the response coordination in support of customer inquiry activity.
- Defines projects accurately to ensure margin erosion is minimized through shipment. Product knowledge continues to expand.
- Utilizes PDS to generate proposals, custom features and ACS’s.
- Responsible for several relatively difficult inquiries.
- Spends considerable time in customer meetings and negotiations.
Systems Analysis:
- Provides Compressor Set selections and Equipment Performance Predictions by applying state of the art programs and an advanced general knowledge of the capabilities and limits of Solar products.
- Responsible for relatively complex selections like multi-compressor stations or complex multi body tandems.
- Coordinates responses to a large number of inquiries.
- Analyze the Customer specification, applications requirements, process and fuel gas properties and resolve discrepancies and deficiencies.
- Assist Sales with the preparation and presentation to the Customer of the equipment selection and equipment performance.
- Assists Sales in negotiations with Customers.
- Finds creative solutions to manage Solar’s technical risks and ensure that technical risks are properly managed.
- Conducts site performance test including the applications of test principals and the conducting and evaluation of tests.
- May act as coach for new employees in the hands-on-training.
Qualifications:
Normally requires a Master degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or other related engineering disciplines, plus 5-7 years turbomachinery experience, preferably with Solar’s product lines; or, the equivalent in years of directly related experience. Extensive knowledge of Solar’s policies, products and processes, and a familiarity with Solar’s markets and industry standards is necessary. Moderate Solar and/or marketplace experience is required, including the engineering and operation of the equipment along with potential impact to customers.
