Role / Title
- The Commercial Category Controller is responsible for owning the commercial agenda; ensuring profitable delivery of the AOP and over-all delivery of the commercial effectiveness agenda.
Key Components of the role
Own Business Category Diagnosis
- Drive development of Category Vision and growth strategies based on analytical diagnose of the category, customers, competition & channel performance
- Be the internal authority on market & trade category dynamics for business performance insights
- Own & share monthly tracking of key metrics & big initiatives (NPD / 4P execution / promotional guidelines & JBP priorities) with clear direction on gaps, issues and opportunities to win
- Diagnose performance gaps and upsides for in cycle 4P planning interventions
- Commercial plan building & strengthening to ensure excellence in execution (GP FC)
- Tailoring Business Strategy to specific retailer/ distribution channel
- Retail channel pricing execution (control)
- Market share performance & drivers
- Channel strategy including price/pack format differentiation
- Customer target setting
Design the Bottom-up Operation Plan
- Lead the bottom-up planning process for the category from customer segmentation through to sign-off of AOP (Annual Operating Plan)
- Develop & customise channel / account priorities to cover what’s needed to win
- Set execution targets for success on innovation initiatives (distribution, mix, activation & commercial KPI’s)
- Define and drive execution of strategies to win at shelf – range, space and layout
Profitably Delivery of the Category AOP
- Lead the management and delivery of the current year plan through the Monthly Performance Review cycle
- Deliver in-year corrective action through mix, price and promotion
- Lead monthly Category :NAM meetings delivering sales engagement and business alignment
- Oversee process of short-dated stock clearance & commercial allocations
Delivery of the Revenue Management Plan
- Set out the Revenue Management agenda and promotional strategy and guidelines for the category
- Create Great Selling Stories from Brand and Category Opportunities
- Set out external customer rationale for promotional strategies
- Track execution & impact of RGM strategy for learnings & intervention requirements
Inspire and engage others
- Management responsibility for Commercial Category Manager and Category Development Manager
- Lead the Commercial Category agenda with Brand & Sales teams to plan & execute with excellence
- Engage and inspire NAMs and wider teams in delivery of all elements of the plan
- Lead the collation & externalisation of brand content for customer sell in dates / events
Experience and Skills
- 5+ years commercial experience across sales, marketing or category, with well evidenced business acumen, problem solving and commercial judgement
- Educated to degree level, higher degree (EG: MBA) desirable but not essential
- Drive for results, combining tenacity and urgency
- Leadership, coaching and the proven ability to deliver through others
- Strong relationship building and influencing skills within organisation and with trade customers
- Effective, concise and impactful communication
- Creative thinker in terms of identifying opportunities, defining solutions and ways of working
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
